FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

All You Need To Know About Our May 2024 Event

  • Goals Table

Based on online clinical research, we have designed a daily calorie goal chart based on age, gender, and weight which approximates 9 miles of moderate walking per day. Please select your goal based on this table and enter it into the Apple Fitness app.

  • You need an Apple iPhone that enables Move calories (red ring) to be measured in the Apple Fitness app. An Apple Watch is preferred, but other wearables may work. You will have to share data (e.g., Move calories) in Apple Fitness with one of the organizers. Finally, one must set your Move calories goal per the table below.

  • The competition runs 21 days from May 4 to May 24, but only your top 18 day’s scores count. This allows participants to have three “rest” days in three weeks.

  • Each person’s daily calorie goal, if achieved, will be equal to 100 points or the equivalent of closing one’s red ring in the Apple Fitness app. This allows people of different ages, weights and genders to calibrate to one scoring system.

  • The actual metric will be cents per point (with points being a derivation of calories). The cents
per point will be determined just prior to the beginning of the competition. This will be a
function of the number of participants, the final donor pledge commitments, and a goal of 100%
payout of the pledge commitments at 130% of the group’s calorie goals.

  • There is no minimum number of calories to burn. However, if you don’t achieve at least 1,800
points across the competition, you will not be eligible for any dividend payment. The maximum
points one can earn in a day is 300 points, which is a very, very hard day of physical exertion.

  • For those who achieve at least 1,800 points across the entire competition, all the $40
payments will be aggregated into one purse and each participant will receive a payment back
from that purse based pro rata on their final points relative to the points of all participants
who achieved their goals. One will make more money back the higher they are on the leaderboard.
Venmo payout of the dividend will happen promptly after the end of the competition.

  • The participating charities will receive a pro rata amount of their respective pledge commitments
based on the % achieved by the group’s fitness output.

  • Regular exercise controls weight, combats health conditions/disease and drives longevity.
Exercising with friends enriches relationships. Competition and rewards drive personal
performance. You will be more motivated by risk of loss of the “buy-in”. You can drive habit
forming change in your exercise. Finally, giving to non-profits is rewarding.

  • We can maintain your privacy in the public leaderboards by using a pseudonym instead of
your names and we can maintain the privacy of your email if needed.

  • The donor’s will be asked to make their donations to the respective charities based on the %
achieved, and the remainder of their pledge is to be kept or donated at their discretion.

  • Any exercise or movements which cause Move calories in Apple Fitness will count. Examples
include walking, tennis, soccer, pickleball, gym classes, running errands. It is common for
people to close half of their ring in a day even without an intentional exercise activity based on
movement around the house alone.

  • You will be asked to share your data (e.g., Move calories) within the Apple Fitness app with
one of the organizers who will be recording your data between 10-11 pm PT each evening. If
technical issues arise with your data, participants can coordinate with their designated
organizer contact.

accelerometer to determine approximate calories burned. Make sure your vitals for age and
weight are updated in Apple Health for more precise readings. Also make sure you wearable is
snug against your skin for more accurate readings.

  • The daily goals are meant to be challenging to achieve. If you have to exercise more than 90
minutes per day to achieve your daily calorie goal, please discuss with an organizer whether
there are any potential technical issues.

  • At the end of the competition, Compete for Causes will make the donation to the charities
owed from the aggregate of the buy-in amounts, but Compete for Causes will not take any tax
deduction. Please consult with your personal tax advisor regarding your buy-in amount.

  • We may provide additional prizes to the competition from vendors and other sponsors.
